3rd Grade Curriculum


Students Will Develop:

  • Continued phonemic awareness. The student will demonstrate the ability to hear, identify and manipulate words, syllables, onsets, rhymes and individual sounds in spoken words.
  • Ability to decode unknown words.
  • Basic syllabication.
  • Skills to build and understand compound words and base words.
  • The use of suffixes and prefixes.
  • Building vocabulary.
  • Ability to understand and explain basic synonyms, antonyms, and homophones/homonyms.
  • Fluency – build sight word vocabulary to identify words rapidly.
  • Reading regularly at the instructional level.
  • Identification of cause and effect.
  • Making comparisons.
  • Using prior knowledge to predict text.
  • Beginning to identify different genres of literature.

Third Grade Language Development

Language development is integral in the formation of a well-rounded elementary school student. Daily, multiple opportunities will be afforded every elementary student in oral language development. Students will be engaged in individual, paired and group discussions. All students will be engaged in meaningful student and teacher-led discussion.


Third Grade Mathematics:

Basic Operations

  • Addition and Subtraction facts.
  • Master two digit addition and subtraction with and without regrouping.
  • Introduce three digit addition and subtraction with and without regrouping.
  • Introduce the concepts of multiplication and division.
  • Introduce the fractional part of a whole.

Number Patterns

  • Number families.
  • Skip count by 2, 5, 10, 100.
  • Recognizing patterns.
  • Comparison of numbers and patterns by using <, >, and = signs.

Problem Solving

  • Recognizing keywords in a story problem.
  • Gathering data and showing it on a chart.
  • Using graphs and charts to solve problems.
  • Introduce the concept of probability.


  • Students will identify 2 and 3 dimensional geometric figures.
  • Students will identify congruent shapes.
  • Students will identify symmetrical shapes.

Time and Calendar

  • Understand the concept of time to five minute intervals.
  • Understand the calendar, hours, days, weeks, months and year.
  • Recognize money units.
  • Count money to the dollar.
  • Elapsed time.


  • Measure length, temperature, weight, and capacity using customary and metric units.
  • Find area and perimeter.

Place Value to 1000

  • Students will read and write numbers for 100-999.
  • Students will compare and order 3-digit numbers.


In third grade religion, the students begin to understand that we are all God’s children. As Catholic Christians, we love and trust God. The student understands that Jesus is the Son of God and our Savior. Students gain a broader understanding of the Catholic Mass. Prayers memorized in second grade are:

  • Our Father
  • Act of Contrition
  • Hail Mary
  • Grace (before meals)
  • Glory Be

Students in third grade will attend weekly Mass and the Catechesis of the Good Shepherd program. Faith First, our religion text, exposes our students to our creed, worship, sacraments and morality, as well as Christian prayer. Second grade students are prepared for the sacraments of Reconciliation and First Communion.

Social Studies

Third Grade Social Studies, Students Will:

  • Use information located in resources such as encyclopedias, timelines, visual images (mind maps, webbing), atlases, globes, and use computer-based technologies for research.
  • Use children’s literature and technology to compare and contrast one’s own community to others. Identify the order of events on a simple timeline.
  • Name major landmarks in the community and construct simple maps showing some of these landmarks. Use directional indicators such as north, south, east and west, and give titles to a map.
  • Identify basic landforms, bodies of water, continents and human-made features on a map.
  • Identify examples of rules in classroom or community, and understand how rules help people live and work together safely and peacefully and the consequences of breaking them.
  • Understand the life skills of honesty, courage, patriotism and other admirable traits seen in United States history and in famous citizens.
  • Explain and demonstrate good citizenship. (voting)
  • Understand how history involves events and people of other times and places through legends, folktales and historical accounts (example: Johnny Appleseed) in children’s literature.
  • Identify examples of interesting Americans through exposure to biographies of important people of the past and present.
  • Examine the interaction of the environment and the people of the community. Describe how location and weather affect the way people live.
  • Understand basic economic elements found in communities.
  • Describe the occupations and roles of people in the neighborhood and community who provide goods and services.
  • Describe ways people are paid, the places to keep their money safe, and ways they pay for goods and services.
  • Develop and practice the process skills of social studies.
  • Examine communities from a spatial perspective.
  • Describe landmarks and cultural features of a community.
  • Identify locations on a basic map, write direction going from one location to another, and use directional indicators to describe locations on a map using both cardinal and intermediate directions.
  • Analyze human characteristics of communities.


Third Grade Science, the Student Will:

  • Learn about the forces of gravity, friction, magnetism, air pressure and water pressure.
  • Study simple food chains.
  • Be introduced to animal classification and understand that all animals belong to one of the six groups (mammals, birds, insects, reptiles, amphibians or fish).
  • Study the environment and how humans have impacted the environment.
  • Be introduced to the planets in the solar system, the moon and the sun.
  • Study sound pitches, sources of heat and light.

Overview: The St. Mary’s School Music Curriculum is standard for all grade levels. These standards are to be included as part of the teaching process in elementary general music and middle school music to accomplish the assessment of the five competencies in musical skills. They are aligned with both the national and statewide standards.

Third Grade Music, the Student Will:

  • Sing or play on instruments a varied repertoire of music. This includes appropriate technique, accurate pitches and rhythms with the proper range and degree of difficulty.
  • Create music.
  • Read and notate music. The includes reading, identifying and executing rhythms, melodies and expressive qualities with very easy literature in regards to key, meter, rhythm and range.
  • Listen to, analyze, evaluate and describe music used in the classroom.
  • Relate music to various historical and cultural traditions.

Third Grade Music, the Student Will:

    • Become more beatful, tuneful and artful, by following the 12 steps of Music Literacy designed by Dr. John M. Feierabend.
    • Readiness rote Song Songs and rhymes are learned by rote that will contain rhythm and/or tonal content to be studied later.
    • Conversation Solfege Rote where students bond rhythm and tonal patterns with aural labels.
    • Decode – Familiar which requires aural recall and decoding of songs and rhymes presented by rote at the Readiness stage.
    • Decode – Unfamiliar.
    • Create – Think original musical thoughts.
    • Reading Rote – Introduction to notation symbols.
    • Reading Decode – Familiar.
    • Reading Decode – Unfamiliar.
    • Writing Rote – Learn to write notation.
    • Writing Decode – Familiar.

    • Writing Create or Composition.
      • Be introduced to hymns and repertoire of the Catholic Church to be sung at prayer service and weekly Thursday Mass.
      • Perform at least one concert per year.

Physical Education

Third Grade Physical Education, the Student Will:

      • Be introduced to lifetime activities: bowling and kickball.
      • Explore healthy choices and good nutrition.
      • Understand various fitness vocabulary: Aerobic and anaerobic.
      • Develop new skills: Hockey and good pacing.
      • Continue development of listening skills.
      • Gain better control of body and objects/equipment.


At St. Mary’s Catholic School, we strive to create an artistic atmosphere where students gain confidence and creativity through hands-on experience.  We offer a variety of artistic media to inspire our students. We encouraging them to explore their imagination and use math and reading skills in their projects.

Third Grade students explore more about the color wheel (tints , shades and neutral colors), they apply artistic  processes and skills, learn about artists of the past, work with clay, start to identify foreground, middle ground and background, and the student starts to recognize aesthetic value.
